Welcome to 5th Grade!
Make sure that you check out our weekly What's Happening in 5th Grade page. It is written by your children and gives a weekly update of what is going on in our classroom.
You will able to see some of your child's grades on the Tyler system parent portal. PLEASE understand under reading, I have only included reading logs that have been turned in. The grade that is shown, is not your child's grade for the semester. It does not reflect classroom work.
Under math, only quizzes and tests are posted. Daily classwork and homework is not reflected in the grade posted. I am happy to discuss this with any one.
Homework:
It is given Monday - Thursday. They will have a math practice/task sheet. This is a skill they will have learned in class and will practice on their own at home, currently we are working on volume. Every student has an account on xtramath.org where they are to practice their math facts nightly. This takes just a few minutes. It is very important that your child masters their math facts.
They will also have a spelling activity. Your child will either have 10, 20 or 25 words, depending on their individual level. Each week they will have to earn 100 points on either two 50 point activities or one 100 point activity. This will be due on Thursday.
Each student will be responsible for filling out a reading log. Everyone is expected to read 20 minutes a night. At times I know this is difficult as we have many students in different activities. On those nights we may want to double up the reading on the nights that are a little more open. These will be due every Monday. They do take some time to fill out as I ask the students to reflect on their reading and ask questions about their reading. So it is a good idea not to leave it until Sunday night to fill out.
At the end of each day, I often will give the students a few minutes to work on their homework. This is a great time for them to start, some finish or ask for help.
Each student is to use their assignment notebook. Please review with your child what is due the following day and sign. They are to be signed nightly after your child completes their work. Homework should not take more than 30-40 minutes a night. Please check over your child's home work that it is completed. Some are turning in their work with nothing completed and notebooks are signed. I appreciate your help.
If your child is looking for something more to do, they can always log on to an activity located on activities for home on this website.
If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me through email, [email protected] or call the school at 847-824-1566.
